What type of diet
drugs are available?
There are two main types of diet pills available:
- Appetite Suppressants:
Appetite-regulation drugs which work on chemicals inside the brain
to partially suppress appetite, and
- Fat-Absorption Inhibitors:
(Fat Blockers) Drugs which work in the digestive system to block
the fat you eat from being digested.
Appetite
Suppressants
Appetite suppressants promote weight loss
by tricking the body into believing that it's not hungry or that
it's full. They decrease appetite by increasing serotonin or catecholamine
-- two brain chemicals that affect mood and appetite.
There are several types appetite suppressants
available by prescription:
Phentermine
is an appetite suppressant which works by tricking the brain into
thinking you're not hungry. It disrupts the transmission of signals
from the neurotransmitters in your brain. The result is you don't
feel hungry, you feel full and eat less.
Arguably Phentermine is the most
popular prescription diet pill on the market. Sold under the brand
names of Adipex, Ionamin,
and also as generic Phentermine
HCL, Phentermine accounts for almost half the total current
Appetite Suppressant prescription sales. Perhaps the most compelling
reason is its cheaper price in relation to other FDA approved
diet pills. More...
Meridia,
the brand name for sibutramine, is a neurotransmitter reuptake
inhibitor that suppresses appetite by inhibiting the reuptake
of certain hormones. It therefore helps to increase the levels
of these hormones that control appetite and hunger in the brain.
It is the first "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor" (SSRI)
to be used for the specific use of weight loss.
Bontril,
Didrex and Tenuate
are known as anorectic or anorexigenic drugs. Similar to Phentermine,
Bontril stimulates the central nervous system, increasing heart
rate and blood pressure and decreasing your appetite. These diet
pills are used as a short-term obesity treatment and should be
combined with a calorie controlled diet and exercise program.
Fat-Absorption
Inhibitors
Fat-absorption inhibitors, or "Fat
Blockers", work by preventing your body from breaking down
and absorbing fat eaten with your meals. This unabsorbed fat is
eliminated by bowel movements.
Xenical
is the only example of this type of treatment approved for use
in the U.S.. Xenical works by blocking about 30% of dietary fat
from being absorbed, and is the most recently approved weight
loss drug.

Are prescription diet
pills right for me?
Most prescription diet drugs, including
phentermine, are appetite suppressants.
Because they carry risks, they are recommended only for people
who are at increased medical risk because of their weight. You
may be a candidate for prescription diet drugs if you fall into
one of these two groups:
Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is 25 to 29.9
and you have either high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin
requiring), high cholesterol or triglycerides, or sleep apnea
and you have tried losing weight through diet and exercise for
at least six months.
Your BMI is 30 or above and you have tried
losing weight through diet and exercise for at least six months.
Appetite suppressant medications may be
appropriate for carefully selected patients who are at significant
medical risk because of their obesity. They are not recommended
for use by people who are only mildly overweight unless they have
health problems that is made worse by their weight.
NOTE: Fat-Absorption
Inhibitors are also only recommended for serious
cases of obesity. Consult with your doctor before taking any type
of weight loss medication.

How do I choose the
right prescription diet pills?
Always consult your doctor when considering
prescription diet pills. Your doctor will be able to make the
best recommendation for your specific medical needs. Nobody knows
your current situation better than YOUR doctor!
Remember, prescription diet pills are only
recommended for people who are clinically obese. This is defined
as someone whose BMI (Body Mass Index) is 27 or greater.
If you feel comfortable getting a prescription
from a lisensed doctor over the internet, here are several things
to consider:
- Decide which MAIN category of diet drugs
are best for your situation. Generally, Appetite
Suppressants are short-term weight loss drugs. They will
assist you for several weeks until your body builds up a tolerance--
then you will be on your own. Fat Bockers
are long term diet drugs, effective for several years.
- Once you choose a MAIN category of diet
pills, you will have to pick a specific brand or type. There
are several different brands (and types) of Appetite
Suppressants, while there is only one Fat
Blocker available in the US. Consider whether you would
like 'immediate release' or 'time release' pills.
- Read the drug information provided for
each of the different diet pills to ensure that you understand
all the possible side effects of each drug. Also take into consideration
possible drug interactions.

Are prescription
diet pills safe?
Because all prescription drugs included
on this site are FDA approved, it can be assumed they are all
safe. But this is no guarantee that they won't harm you -or- that
they won't be considered 'unsafe' later on in the future. As with
any prescription drug, always refer to important drug information
and disclosures; including side effects, precautions, and drug
interactions.
Unfortunately, many diet drugs are still
suffering a loss of faith / reputation from the Fen Phen problems
a few years ago. This was when the fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine
used in conjunction with Phentermine, caused some cases of heart
disease. Phentermine used alone has never been shown produce
heart disease.

Why is Phentermine
so popular?
Phentermine received approval by the FDA in 1959. Since then
it has become the most popular diet pill on the market, accounting
for 50 percent of all weight loss prescriptions. Dieters that
take Phentermine diet pills have reported incredible results losing
as much as 15.9 percent of their initial body weight!
Phentermine Is Affordable!
One major reason why dieters prefer Phentermine diet pills is
the price. Compared to some of the leading weight loss prescriptions
(Meridia, Xenical, etc.) Phentermine diet pills are up to 50%
cheaper!
Phentermine HCL Doesn't Affect Sex Drive!
Loss of sex drive is a common side effect among dieters that
take weight loss medications. You'll be happy to know that Phentermine
diet pills are not associated with any sexual side effects. In
clinical studies, the most commonly reported side effects with
Phentermine HCL were depression, drowsiness, increased blood pressure,
irritability, and nervousness. These side effects are very rare
and tend to go away as your body gets adjusted to the medication.
